Boat, Foot or Vehicle: Three Ways to See Nyerere

Most Tanzanian parks permit game viewing from a vehicle and nothing else. Nyerere — the park most people still call Selous — is one of the exceptions, and that is the main argument for going.

From the vehicle. Still the way you cover ground and still how you find the big herds and the cats. The lake circuit in the north of the park is the productive area: a chain of shallow lakes where elephant come down to drink through the afternoon and where wild dog turn up when a pack is denning nearby. Expect long quiet stretches between sightings; the park is enormous and the game is not concentrated the way it is in the Serengeti.

From the water. A boat on the Rufiji changes your eye level. You sit below the bank rather than above it, which puts you level with hippo and with crocodiles hauled out on the sandbars, and close to a bird population that is the best in Tanzania — skimmers working the shallows, fish eagles, carmine bee-eaters nesting in the cut banks in colonies of hundreds. Elephant crossing the channel in front of a boat is a different experience from watching them from a road.

On foot. The one that changes people. You walk with your guide and an armed ranger, single file, covering perhaps six kilometres in three hours. You will see less than you would from a vehicle — that is not the point. On foot you are reading rather than watching: tracks in the sand, a broken branch at elephant height, dung that tells you what has been through and roughly when. When you do come across an animal on foot, the transaction is entirely different, because you are on its terms.

How to combine them. Do not try to do all three in a two-night stay; you will rush all of them. Four nights lets you have a boat morning, a walking morning, and two full days in the vehicle without anything feeling compressed. If you only have time for one thing beyond the game drives, take the boat — it is the more reliable experience, and it works regardless of what the animals are doing that week.
