What a Tanzania Safari Actually Costs, and Where the Money Goes

Quotes for a Tanzanian safari range from about $200 to well over $1,000 per person per day, and the gap confuses people. Here is what sits underneath it.

Park fees are fixed and large. The government sets them and nobody discounts them. Entry to the Serengeti runs to around $70–$80 per person per day, and the Ngorongoro Crater adds a service fee of several hundred dollars per vehicle for a single descent. Camping and concession fees stack on top. On a northern-circuit trip, fees alone can be a third of the price before anyone has eaten or slept anywhere.

The vehicle is the next block. A private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, a full tank across a week of long distances, and a guide who is paid properly, costs what it costs. The cheapest quotes achieve their price by putting seven people in that vehicle instead of four. That is a real saving and a real compromise — everyone gets a window seat in the brochure photograph and not in the actual car.

Accommodation is where the range really opens. A public campsite and a mid-range lodge and a fly-in luxury camp are all sleeping in the same park, watching the same animals, at three prices an order of magnitude apart. This is the single biggest lever on your total and the one most worth thinking about honestly.

Where the savings are real. Travelling in the green season. Choosing the southern circuit, where fees are lower and camps cost less. Driving in rather than flying. Going in a group of four to fill a vehicle. Skipping the balloon flight, which is a genuine experience and genuinely $600.

Where they are not. A cut-price operator is usually cutting the guide's wage, the vehicle's maintenance, or the number of nights inside the park versus outside the gate. Sleeping outside the gate sounds like a detail and costs you the first and last hour of light, which is when animals move.

A working figure. For a mid-range private trip on the northern circuit in high season, budget $350–$450 per person per day, all-inclusive on the ground. The southern circuit runs lower. Fly-in luxury runs several times higher. Anything materially under $200 a day is either a large shared vehicle, accommodation outside the parks, or a corner cut you have not been told about yet.
