Packing Tips

What To Pack For Your First Tanzania Safari

What To Pack For Your First Tanzania Safari

Most first-time safari packing mistakes aren't about missing gear — they're about bringing the wrong version of the right thing. Here's what actually earns its space in the vehicle.

Clothing

Stick to neutral colors — khaki, olive, tan — rather than white, black or bright prints, which stand out to animals and show dust fast. Mornings on an open vehicle are colder than people expect, even in the dry season, so layers matter more than any single heavy jacket.

  • 2–3 lightweight long-sleeve shirts (sun and tsetse fly protection)
  • A warm layer for early morning game drives
  • A light rain jacket if traveling Nov–May
  • Comfortable closed shoes — you won't need hiking boots unless you're trekking

Gear That's Genuinely Worth Bringing

A decent pair of binoculars changes a safari more than almost anything else on this list — most guests underestimate how much detail they'll want at distance. A basic 8x42 pair is a good balance of magnification and stability.

  • Binoculars (one pair per person, not one per vehicle)
  • A dry bag or dust cover for cameras on unpaved roads
  • A reusable water bottle — most camps refill rather than sell bottled water
  • A headlamp for camps without full-time lighting

What To Leave Behind

Camo-patterned clothing is restricted for civilians in Tanzania. Heavy hardshell luggage is also awkward on light-aircraft transfers, which often have strict soft-bag weight limits — check with us before you pack if your itinerary includes a flight between parks.
